Nitromethaqualone is a kind of methaqualone that has similar sedative and hypnotic properties. It is significantly more potent (10x) compared to the parent compound; the typical dose is approximately 25 mg. However, the aromatic nitro group is metabolised to the corresponding aniline, which proved to be a mutagen. As a consequence, nitromethaqualone was not developed further due to toxicity concerns.:

Gidazepam is a prodrug for its active metabolite 7-bromo-5-phenyl-1,2-dihydro-3H-1,4-benzodiazepine-2-one (desalkylgidazepam or bromo-nordazepam). It is used as an antianxiety drug.
